Brick Red Assorted Antique African Trade Bead Necklace.
38 inches long, featuring 77 beads in 11 different types, ranging from 5 mm to 2.5 cm in length.
Beads are likely Venetian, some with millefiori application. Most appear wound, some drawn, others pressed or cast. Cast beads are pitted, possibly resembling coral, and may be West African. Smallest beads are unlined Cornaline d'Aleppo.
The necklace has been restrung; the beads are antique. Arrangement is asymmetrical, yet rhythmic.
Beads are in excellent condition; minor imperfections from manufacturing may be present. Please see photos for details.
Trade beads were primarily made in Venice and Bohemia, with some from Germany, France, and the Netherlands, from the late 1400s to early 1900s, and were traded in Africa and the Americas.
