Antique 19th Century Daguerreotype photograph in Union Case, dating from c. 1839-1860.
The daguerreotype image was the first photographic process, formed on a silver plate surface that reflects like a mirror. Due to its delicate nature and susceptibility to oxidation, it is mounted in a sealed case with a glass cover. This process was complex and labor-intensive, producing only one original photograph. Ambrotype images were developed later in 1844 as an alternative.
