Civil War Captain Charles Henry Morgan autograph on a leaf removed from a 19th-century autograph album.
Charles Henry Morgan served as a CIVIL WAR LIBBY PRISON ESCAPE ARTIST, POW, LT. and CAPTAIN OF “F” Co. IN THE FIELD and STAFF OF THE 21st WISCONSIN INFANTRY 1862-1865.
He later served as a SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR LT. COLONEL and COMMANDER OF THE 5th MISSOURI VOLUNTEER INFANTRY and a 5-TERM US DEMOCRATIC PARTY CONGRESSMAN FROM MISSOURI 1875-1879, 1883-1885, 1893-95, and a US REPUBLICAN PARTY CONGRESSMAN FROM MO 1909-11. He was also a MEMBER OF THE MISSOURI HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FROM LAMAR, BARTON COUNTY, MISSOURI 1872-1874.
At the call for troops in 1861, Charles Henry Morgan enlisted in the Union Army and was first mustered into the 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry as a private. In 1862 he became an officer in the 21st Wisc. Before he was twenty-two he had escaped five times from rebel prisons and had fought in eleven pitched battles and engagements of the war.
