“Father of Armories” (1843 – 1938). Civil War Major and Aide-de-Camp in the Third Division, N.G.S.N.Y. Recruited, organized, and drilled the “Union College Zouaves” for Civil War service. Major General of the National Guard of New York by a special bill passed by the Legislature of New York. Colonel and Commander of the 10th Division, N.Y.N.G., during the breakup of the Albany Railroad Strike of 1877. State Senator from Albany, New York, 1886-1887 and 1892-1895, drafted a joint resolution of the NY Legislature calling upon the US Congress to provide the National Guard of the States with modern magazine rifles and munitions. Member of the New York House of Representatives (Assembly) in 1882, revising military codes and statutes governing the NY National Guard, and acting as Chairman of the Assembly Committee Military.
