From a large collection of vintage items. On the back: "Healing God," signed by the artist (signature hard to discern). AUTHENTIC NAVAJO SANDPAINTING.
Sandpaintings originated from Navajo healing ceremonies. The medicine man builds a sandpainting and places the patient in the middle. Sand from the painting is rubbed over certain parts of the patient's body to aid in the healing process. When the ceremony is over, the sandpainting is destroyed, thereby destroying the illness.
This Navajo symbol of healing is now appreciated as a work of art.
Framed; the reverse side has a few tears in the brown paper backing. Informational label and the artist's handwriting are intact. The frame is elaborate.
